Chinese Heritage History

Existing documents indicate that Lehigh was among the first few American educational institutions to open its door to Chinese students in the late 19th century. This was the era when the last ruler of the Qing Empire (1644-1911), the Empress Dowager would for the first time send a group of young students to Western countries. How and why Lehigh University was chosen as one of the first recipients for this select group is unknown. Nevertheless, this event set Lehigh on a historical trajectory of international engagement with China that was unprecedented and would continue up to the present. This project proposes to unearth this buried past and showcase for American and Chinese audiences Lehigh’s contribution to China’s development and the contribution of Chinese alumni to Lehigh. To explore the historical connections between China and Lehigh starting from 1879, we would divide the research into the following four time periods:

  • The first Chinese students came to Lehigh in 1879.
  • The first Chinese student graduated from Lehigh was in 1901.
  • The first Chinese student’s club was founded in 1909.
  • From 1879-1953, the total number is 110 including 6 Ph.D.
